HOUSE SPIDERS.

Characteristics: Gray-brown to dark brown; two dark stripes on the head and thorax.

Habitat: Usually found in quiet undisturbed areas of gardens, backyards, sheds, homes, attics, and any other man-made structure.

Habits: Builds cobwebs that are made up of crisscrossed strands of sticky silk. The most common spider in North America and can live up to seven years. If webs do not yield prey, the webs are abandoned and a new site is chosen.

WOLF SPIDERS.

Characteristics: Large; black, gray, or brown pattern on the back.

Habitat: Actively hunt in the open during the day and night, living in leaf litter and grassy areas. Can be found indoors around doors and windows, and inside closets, basements, and garages.

Habits: Do not build webs to capture prey. Rapid, active hunters that patrol the ground for insects day and night. Female spiders keep their spiderlings on their back until they are grown.

BROWN RECLUSE SPIDERS.

Characteristics: Light to dark brown, violin marking behind the head

Habitat: Constructs webs in any dark, undisturbed area in closets, basements, and garages. Will wander into shoes, boxes, bedding, and clothing items.

Habits: Reclusive and passive hunters. Also referred to as the ‘violin’ or ‘fiddleback’ spider. Found in cracks and crevices in and under rocks or the loose bark of dead trees.

BLACK WIDOW SPIDERS.

Characteristics: Shiny black or brown body, bright red marking.

Habitat: Will build irregular, erratic webs in quiet undisturbed areas. Webs are found in rock piles, block walls, sprinkler valve boxes, sheds, garages, and the undersides of patio furniture.

Habits: The most venomous spider in North America. Builds messy, erratic, and irregular-shaped webs. Despite their venom, black widows are typically non-aggressive.
